A Letter from Joan Shea, Executive Director

OREGON CRAFTED APRIL 2009 NEWSLETTER
Greetings to all Oregon Crafted artists, crafters, partners, and supporters!

The staff of Oregon Crafted continues to realign programming to address the needs of artists. To this end Oregon Crafted needed to learn more about the artists concerns. Every artist member of Oregon Crafted has received a personal phone call from another artist or member of the Board of Directors. The information gleamed from the artists will be used to develop future programs. We will keep you advised as to the results of the survey.

With the downturn in the economy The Board of Directors and I are working on a new strategic plan that will incorporate the survey results, marketing and fundraising needs. The target date of the completions of the strategic plan is the middle of May.

Congratulations to our Oregon Crafted Board President, Kathi Phillpott, who has received a Pacific Continental Bank employee “Volunteer of the Year” award for her work with Oregon Crafted and the Lane County Dental Society.

Oregon Crafted Guidebook Giveaway

In mid-May Oregon Crafted will be distributing for a limited time, the 2nd Edition Oregon Crafted Guidebook for free! This is our gift to the community and to our artists, and will be a way for the Guidebook to get into as many hands as possible. We will have 17 distribution points in Lane, Linn, Benton, & Lincoln Counties, and we will advertise in local newspapers.

We Need Volunteers to Prepare Guidebooks for Giveaway Promotion

We are adding an update sticker, donation card and addendum to the 2nd Edition Guidebooks in preparation for the Giveaway, and are looking for volunteers to help prepare the books. On Wednesday, April 22nd & Thursday, April 23rd, we will have a work party at the Oregon Crafted office. Starting at 10 am, we will work on books, and then take a pizza break at noon. Everyone is welcome and let us know when you can come!!! If you can’t make it on these dates, we will be prepping books for the next several weeks during our regular office hours, Monday – Thursday, 9 am – 2 pm, and welcome your help whenever it is convenient for you!

April Featured Artist – Debrah Wolf, River Stone Pottery, Sweet Home

“It has been my pleasure to be a Potter and Sculptor for most of my adult life. I love feeling and watching each ball of clay on the wheel transform between the centered pull of my fingers into a new form. The concept that each pot when finished will have a place in someone’s home to function in everyday living has always been very fulfilling to me. All of my sunfaces and face pots, are individually sculpted, using only my fingertips, manipulating the clay from front to back.

When sculpting a face in a pot, the clay is still moist enough to move finger pressure. I begin with the nose, then push out the eyes and cheeks, working from inside and out. The smile happens last. I strive each time to give each face ultimate contentment and joy. No matter what mood I might bring to work, when the pot smiles, I find myself smiling back. My greatest hope is that they will have the same effect upon others.”

Visit Debrah in her studio on the Upper Calapooia River. Take Hwy 228 to Holley and turn onto Upper Calapooia Dr. Travel 4.5 mi up river, watch for signs. Phone: 541-367-3772.
