News From the OC Office

Artrain USA in Retrospect

Bringing Artrain USA to Eugene was an incredible success. Community attendance on Saturday and Sunday was over 1200 people, and 500 school children and seniors participated in the 2 tour days. The City of Eugene staff, the OCBE Board of Directors, volunteers and staff, and the staff of Lane Arts Council should celebrate this success. Our partnerships, along with our sponsors, made this all happen. A big thank you goes to the City of Eugene, for supporting this project wholeheartedly and helping to give the experience of the Native Views exhibit to the people of Eugene and the surrounding areas. Other sponsors included the Spirit Mountain Community Fund of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, Dr. Tamara Stenshoel, the Oregon Country Fair, the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History, the Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics, A&M Reload (who provided the train site), and various in-kind donors. An opening reception was held at the Many Nations Longhouse on the University of Oregon campus and was attended by 75 people.

Our thanks also to the Oregon Crafted artists (Megas McDonald, Hap Reubens, Ellen Furstner, and other volunteer artists) who came to the warehouse and the train and demonstrated their craft for all the visitors who came, as well as the many volunteers who helped park cars, set up and take down exhibits and facilities, and lead group tours.  In spite of pouring rain and some wild winds, hundreds of people were able to visit the exhibit, see the demonstrating artists, and learn about the artists who were represented on the train.

This was a great experience for all!

Tina Rinaldi’s Workshop

On Saturday, November 18, Tina Rinaldi led a workshop for 27 Oregon Crafted artists at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library. Tina holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History, a Master’s in Art Administration, teaches Art Administration at the University of Oregon, and is the former director of the Jacobs Gallery in Eugene, so she was well qualified to lead us through some of the many topics we brainstormed.  These topics included:

• What to include in portfolios/bios/statements
• Using digital media
• Breaking into the national scene
• Website development – having a website vs. being in a gallery
• Working with galleries, deciding which galleries to use, monitoring our work, negotiating percentages
• Juried shows vs. high end (or “don’t bother”)
• Pricing
• Internet business advertising
• Digital presentation (geared towards a review by a jury, include artist statement with photos, Tina’s famous quote:  “Follow instructions!”)
• Promo packages/brochures/media kit (include past articles, press release, artist statement)
• Getting into collections
• Mentors

Although it was impossible to explore all of these subjects in one day, we look forward to more educational workshops with Tina!  Watch your Oregon Crafted newsletter for announcements of other workshops.
